My new job

I've been talking to this preschool off and on since I started looking for jobs in March or April, but they could not hire me as a teacher because I don't have my NY State Teaching Certificate. They had told me they wanted to hire me on as an educational consultant (part-time contract work) to help them with their lesson planning. Well, all of the sudden this program coordinator position came up and they wanted to interview me even though I don't have my certificate and I don't have a master's degree, which is usually required of jobs such as this.

Tuesday they called and offered me the job, and I took it. Of course! I mean, this is a promotion, and four months ago every preschool I interviewed at wouldn't hire me to be a lead teacher because I didn't have a NY Certificate. The position is somewhere between a lead teacher and an assistant director. I only have 2 more rungs to move up the private school ladder!

Today was my first day and I'm a little scared. I found out that I am managing a team of 8 teachers. 8 teachers who are all 5-20 years older than me. I love the school, but I'm very frightened by the fact that I'll have so much responsibility.

But on the not-scary side of things, it's a great school. The teachers need some help getting organized but they're excellent, knowledgable teachers who love their jobs. Today they threw together an impromptu welcome party and ordered everybody Chinese food. One of the things I like the most is the diversity of the school - the staff and students alike are very culturally diverse, and we even have a few men who work there. It's a very happy, colorful, fun place to be and I think I'm going to like it much more than my last school. I'm going to like it a HELL of a lot more than nannying that brat, I mean, James. An added bonus is that the Johnsons are hiring me back on part-time, just like in Atlanta, so I'll still get to see Agnes & Oscar regularly.

I'm so glad I have a job I like!

Congrats on the job - sounds like you are moving up in the world! Also - I read an interesting article about a book written by a woman who owns a nanny finding agency in DC. Thought about you. It sounded like these nannies have pretty sweet jobs and the good ones are in high demand and don't have to put up with things unless they want to. Can't remember the name of the book - but the washpost featured the article.
